I have just finished reading my first and probably the only Chicken Soup book. Books about searching for soul enlighten is not my kind of read. I finally read one Chicken Soup book because it talks about pets, and you can see from this blog how much I love my pets.

The book that I mentioned about is Chicken Soup for The Cat and Dog Lover’s Soul. I have written my review of the book in my main blog, you can read it here.

The book doesn’t have stories about turtle, and in this blog that I have dedicated for my turtles, I want to share my own chicken soup story.

People might think that reptiles can not think and they can’t show affection toward their owner….I have to say that those people are so wrong!! Reptiles will behave depends on how their owner treat them.

My turtles know their names and they listen to me from time to time. They are not as obedient as dog but you’ll be amazed to see that they understand it perfectly well when I told them not to go somewhere. Once when the front door was open, Kroten stepped out of the front door and I told her with higher tone ‘Kroten, don’t go outside!!’ and Kroten turned back and sat inside the house looking at the view outside the door.

I can write pages of their amazing-ness but for now I only want to share you the story of how the kept me away from loneliness.

I still live with my parents, Indonesian rarely live separately from their parents unless they get married or have to work far from home. Last year, my mom had to struggle to fight her tumor in her stomach. We decided to take her to Padang, my dad went along to accompany her. I was left alone in our house. Our small house became so big for me. No one was around to listen for my story at my school, I love telling stories of my students to my parents. No one was around to fight or laugh together. I never lived alone in my entire life till that day.

But then I realized that I was not entirely alone 🙂 I have two cute turtles to accompany me.

Kame, as usual, always tried to find me and stood close to me. When I was watching TV and sitting on the floor, she would come closer and sat nicely on my leg or foot, sometimes she even fell asleep on my leg. I Allowed her to walk around the house, my house is her house too, but she chose to sit near me.

Kroten who usually so hard to get close to, slowly changed. She tried to find me whenever I let her out of her tank. There were 5 rooms in my house, and she started looking in every room till she found me. When she had found me, she stayed in the same room till I moved to another room. She tried to be closer than before, she often climbed my leg just like what Kame usually done.

They really filled my days with joy, full of joy 🙂

When I needed someone to talk to, Kame or Kroten would look straight into my eyes and listened to me closely, well at least to me they seemed like listening. They would stay in their spot till I finished talking.

Every time, I came home from work, they welcomed me by raising their upper body as if they were so eager to see me again. As for Kame, she would raise her arm ups and downs as a sign that she wanted to shake my hand.

Although at first I fell so lonely when my mom and dad went to Padang, but I was glad Kame and Kroten were there to put a happy smile on my face.

Something funny happened when my parents finally came back home. Kroten started chasing my dad around. Whenever she heard my dad’s voice, she would try to find him. She would raise her upper body and one arm so that my dad can hold her had (see the video below). I used to think that Kroten loved my dad so much and she missed him, but this act only lasted for few weeks.

Now, she is no longer chasing my dad and completely ignores him…I might be wrong but somehow I think that Kroten chased my father to tell him something, maybe she was trying to tell him “please don’t let my mommy alone again

I‘m glad that turtles can live for 20 to 40 years, I want them to be there with me as long as I live. I pray to God not to take them away from me before I die.

As I already said before, reptiles will behave depend on how their owner treat them. If they treat reptiles as objects to look at, then they will act as cold as their blood. People who treat their reptiles with warm love will easily turn their reptiles-pets into good companions just like other warm-blooded pets.

Here is a picture of my dad with his reptile-pet, a Tokay gecko named Toga. She had passed away in 2008. Tokay is a vicious gecko that can easily bite off your finger and yet here she was licking my dad’s nose.

Here is my picture with Kame kissing my nose, the picture’s quality is not good so I have to edit it a little 😉

  1. Christmas headbonks and purrrrrrs from Avalon.

  2. I understand what you mean. I once lived with someone who owned a boa constrictor and I ended up the one taking care of her. I have always loved snakes but this was my first experience having one and I fell in love with her. I could tell by the way she would look at me and flick her tougue that we were communicating and that she loved me back. It one was the best parts of my relationship with this person that I was able to have this relationship with such a beautiful creature. Thank you for sharing your story, it was beautiful.

I loved my guinea pigs as much as u love ur turtles-in my opinion every animal understands his owner.I talked to my pets as if they were human beings and they understand me!It could be possible, that every animal has the soul of a passed away human and they can still understand us but we’re not able to understand their languages 🙂
And u can be lucky, that ur reptiles can show their love to u-I didn’t know that before, cause everytime a saw a turtle they were sad and lonely under a ruby light. So I thought how can someone have a turtle as a pet?
It’s good to learn more about ur little friends!
But as fine as a pet can be-they can’t replace a human friend.I couldn’t live without my mom, cause she’s the only one I’m still having…

I’m glad I can change your perception on turtles as pet 🙂

Yup, I agree! all animals can understand their owner if their owner treat them nicely.

For me, pets, human friends and family are equally important. I’m happy that I don’t have to choose between them

What a lovely post! Odd that I hadn’t seen it before. It makes perfect sense to me that a turtle will be affectionate if the owner is and, yes I guess, almost every animal. And they really sense our feelings, they know when you are sad or feeling lonely.
It makes me very sad to think I will loose my cats one day. They don’t live as long as turtles. It’s heartbreaking to loose them.
I’m sorry to hear about your mom. Hopefully she is well again.

I really believe that ALL animal can be affectionate, it’s like a two way love connection, if the owner loves the animals they will also loves their owner.

It’s true that you’ll loose your cats one day because they don’t live as long as turtle…but I wouldn’t call my situation as something better than yours…I often think who will take care and love them as much as I am if I die before them.

Thank you Caroline, she is getting better each day 🙂
